Google In-Search Search Engine Detected!

When you type in the word ‘youtube‘ or ‘wikipedia‘ on Google you will see another search engine was placed inside the search result list for Youtube.com and Wikipedia.com. These search form will then search within the site and will appear as a Google search result, which brings me to an interesting thought.

I imagine if Google also include Twitter, Digg, and Wordpress to this in-search search engine, i mean that would be very helpful since those user-generated websites has loads of data and require user to likely do a re-search within the site using it’s own search engine. Of course this will then weakened the internal / built in search engine structure and most likely will kill some of these website because some of them are monetizing through their search engine to produce targeted ads, such as Twitter.

Search engines are vital for gathering informations about user, and a lot of web apps understands this concept and really put on some effort on their search engine functionality. So, what do you think Google is doing with this feature? To ease, or to kill? Thoughts?

Oracle Will (or Should) Kill MySQL

The shocking news of the week, Oracle acquire Sun. And i fear this strategy will damage one of Sun’s main product, MySQL. Now, Sun have other products like Solaris (Operating System) and also Java which is doing very well by generating significant revenue for Sun, but Open Source is not really Sun’s game. After Sun acquire MySQL, almost everyone from MySQL project left Sun for another open source-driven companies, which is more likely to happen again this time with Oracle. The same thing also apply to OpenSolaris. Read the rest of this entry »

Okay, We’re At The Top. What do we do?

Stumbled upon this report (pdf) by BuzzCity, a mobile developer community based on Singapore. The report for 4th quarter 2008 reveals a fact that Indonesia is the top country for the total mobile ad-banner served at 1.8 billion ad impression. A fantastic growth compared to 4th quarter 2007 with 200 million ad impression or just over 800%. This fact surely caused a positive buzz for mobile ad network and content provider to pay more attention to Indonesia as a potential market. Actually Indonesia has already been a target for many mobile-related vendors such as Nokia who has the highest selling rate of cellphone in Indonesia, and also Blackberry (Indonesia has the highest growth of Blackberry users in the world).

Another fascinating fact is that most Indonesian in bigger cities (Jakarta, Bali, Medan, Surabaya, Jogjakarta) has more than one cellphone, some of them even have 3 cellphones. I have a friend who have both Blackberry Javelin and iPhone 3G, weird? Not in Indonesia. These facts is enough for all provider all around the world to set their eyes on Indonesian huge market.

Now, I’m an Indonesian. What does this fact means to me? This means that myself and other IT-based developer will have a rough competition with the bigger (and global) vendor in terms of content market. Ad impression rate is associated with content distribution which obviously target local audience and brings local content. Most ad network develop partnership with local content provider and bring the content to the right audience via mobile, which is the most common strategy. There’s other alternative strategy in bringing ads to the audience is using mobile application such as games, release it for free and generate revenue from inline ads. This method is quite popular (I’ve seen a lot of mobile game ad on TV) and is the second most popular strategy in bringing mobile ads.

Well that’s the only strategy i can come up with, which I’m sure there’s more to it. Nevertheless, Indonesian people (especially entrepreneurs and businessmen) need to raise up the effort to win this huge market of mobile consumer.

trying to integrate online & print media. on a small scale.

Today, i finally have the chance to experiment. Im not very qualified to be called “vast experience” in the online business, but i try to learn all i can. And now, my white rat moment is coming and i am so excited. Propertykita (where i worked) is having a showcase early next month, and i see it fit to be a time for an experiment i’ve been brewing for quite a while now.

Propertykita is an online business and we do things via the internet and telemarketing (okay, you can blame me on that part) as to support our marketing division. I’ve spoken to my CEO earlier today about my plan to bring the online data we have from our clients to print media as a catalog to spread on the showcase event. In my chain of thoughts, using the brochure we can reach out to our second-rank client to help them promote their content because they simply can’t afford to do their own showcase. So, we charge them with a cheap advertising cost that will surely appealling to them. Secondly, i also try to reach out to first-rank clients that would like to participate in our print brochure with a slightly cheaper compared than having a web banner but also slightly more expensive than making their own showcase or even having their own brochure.

With these income from brochures, i hope it can add more budget for making souvenirs for our customers who come to the showcase, not a direct profit, but it adds up value in front of our customers without losing any cost. okay.. we did raise some profit from this whole short-term business plan.

What is it that im trying to prove here with my experiment? Im have an opinion (based on facts) that integrates online media with print media. Now, it worked pretty fine in the US and other countries but it certainly not in Indonesia. Now, i hope i can collect some result to prove NOT ONLY about integrating online & print media is feasible and making profit, but more to situational approach of the implementation. Not a solid business plan, i know. But at least this experiment can lead me to my next experiment :)
